British general Edward Braddock played a key role in the early part of the French and Indian War (1754-63; known in Europe as the Seven Years' War).
In 1755, he arrived in North America with the full intention of chasing the French and their Indian (Native American) allies out of the disputed Ohio Country, a vast wilderness in the middle of the continent. But his first major military campaign against the French ended in disaster for the overconfident Braddock.
